Tana Toraja is a very special and mysterious place, also known as ‘The Land of the Heavenly Kings’ and it is located in the south of Sulawesi - another beautiful island in the massive Indonesian Archipelago. This 3-Days trip will take you to see ‘the village of the dead’ where you will learn more about the local culture and the significant funeral traditions. In the meantime, the stunning unspoiled surroundings will take your breath away. An amazing trip it will be!
DAY 1: Arrive in Makassar. Depart to Tana Toraja (L)
After your plane lands on Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar, Sulawesi, one of our professional guides will be there to pick you up and drive you straight to your first island destination: Tana Toraja. It is an 8-hour drive but it won’t be boring whatsoever! We’ve turned it into a wonderful sightseeing tour, passing typical Buginese Villages and those iconic traditional houses on poles. We will make a stop at a local fishermen village in the Barru district of the island to take in those stunning beach panoramas and see all of the traditional Pa’bagan fishing boats out on the water. In the afternoon, it is time for a coffee break at Puncak Lakawan where you get to gaze at the dramatic view of Mount Kabobong and in the late afternoon, we will arrive at Rantepao in Tana Toraja where we have booked you a hotel room. It is time to call it a day and take a good, well-deserved rest.
DAY 2: Full-day Tana Toraja Tour (B,L)
After a good night rest and a delightful breakfast, we continue our journey on these sacred lands and the first stop is at Kete’ Kesu - a traditional Torajan village with beautiful Tongkonan houses and rice barns. You will visit the giant tomb of the royal Kere’ Kesu family, which is quite impressive to see. Then, we will visit Lemo, one of the oldest burial cliffs in Toraja, often referred to as ‘home of the spirits’. This massive tombstone cliff is lined with traditional Tau-Tau sculptures - carved wooden effigies of the deceased. From here, we go to Londa, an ancient burial cave and after lunch, we visit another impressive place: Bori’ - a mysterious stone monument from the megalithic Era, thousands of years old. At our next stop, the Tinombayo Highlands, the view of rice terraces and traditional Torajan villages is truly awe-inspiring and you can take some beautiful photos. From here, we drive to Batutumonga and pay a visit to the cultural town of Rantepao. Then, we will take you to see the mountain boulder graves at Lokomata. This is enough input for today! We will take you back to your hotel in the afternoon to take a rest and think back on the amazing things you have seen on the island of Sulawesi today.
DAY 3: Tana Toraja to Makassar - flight to next destination (B,L)
Enjoy a good hearty breakfast, for today we will be heading back to Makassar where you will hop on the plane to your next travel destination. Gaze at those stunning sceneries one more time on the way - this is your last chance! For lunch, we will stop at Pare-Pare, a great seafood restaurant and we will arrive at Hasanuddin Airport in Makassar in the afternoon.
